Silk on gauze, with delicately worked central bouquet cartouche in greens, blues, and yellows with pink ribbon, encircled by a thin sinuous garland; initialed and dated below, appears to be T.W. 1806; twelve unique cross pattern darning examples around; the ones in the four corners light and subtle, the other eight in various colors and patterns; in figured maple veneer frame, under glass, with Windsor Antiques NY label on reverse. Not examined out of frame. Some staining and a few small holes. Approximately 12" x 12 3/4" (sight), framed to 17 3/8" x 18 1/4".
"Darning samplers were used to teach girls how to mend worn places and holes in cloth used for domestic garments and household items, such as curtains and table cloths. The darning imitated various weaves, such as tabby weaves or twill weaves, of various types.
Surviving examples often have darned areas in the middle of the cloth, as well as along its edges. The simplest examples are worked with coloured threads in both directions, so that any mistakes can easily be seen. As the skill of the girl increased, one colour was used in both directions. The most testing form of darning was worked in white thread in both directions."
BROWNE, Clare and Jennifer WEARDEN (eds; 1999). Samplers from the Victoria and Albert Museum, London: V&A Publications.

Pick Up/Shipping: Peterborough Auctions has limited space and a busy schedule. Buyers are asked to make timely arrangements to pick up, or to arrange shipping of purchased lots. Designated pickup hours will be posted for the two weeks following each auction, after which all pickups are by appointment only. Buyers of large lots or buyers with multiple lots on their invoice are encouraged to schedule an appointment. Lots left in our gallery for 30 days without communication of arrangements are subject to storage charges ($5 per day, per lot); after 60 days these lots will be deemed abandoned and disposed of as seen fit by Peterborough Auctions.
Peterborough Auctions does not directly ship any lots sold at our auctions, but works with a trusted and reliable shipping partner in Peter at KaSa CMT, Inc. located right down the road here in Peterborough NH. Certain lots are subject to in house shipping quotes in an effort to expedite the process. In this case, shipping costs will be added to the invoice total. Lots will be shipped to the address on the invoice once payment is received. It is the responsibility of the buyer to update their address or inform us of an alternate address BEFORE making payment as the flat rate shipping process is automated. We are not responsible for any additional fees to redirect a flat rate delivery.
