Antique 19th Century American School Portrait of a Caroline Hunt-Cushing Gale, 1830's/1840's. Oil on board. Writing on the reverse of board identifies the subject as Caroline Hunt-Cushing Gale (1810-1845. New Lebanon, NY), Mother of Olive Beach Gale-Howard (Born 1837, Pitcher, Chenango County, New York- d. 1901 Pittsfield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts), Mother of Alonzo Gale Howard, Father of Louis, Olive, Margaret and Elizabeth Howard. Dr. Alonzo Gale Howard was born in La Valle, Sauk County, Wisconsin, in 1869, and died in Boston on July 4, 1938. Caroline was married to Stephen Cushing (d.1831) and to Daniel Beach Gale (1806-1867). 23 1/2" x 16 1/2" (sight), framed to 28" x 23" in period wooden frame. Provenance: Samuel Walker (1908-1964) master craftsman, engineer and ship model builder from Boston, Massachusetts. Walkerenlisted in the USMC in 1942, and served in the battles of of Saipan and Tinian. After the war, Walker married Elizebeth Howard and started a family, while restoring a 1720's house in Merrimac. This is the house where Walker would go on to make so many exceptional ship models. His work has been exhibited at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, and is included in some of the finest ship model collections in the United States.
