Christopher Gurshin (b. 1945), Folk Art Colonial Scene, 1974. Acrylic on metal. 42" x 30" (sight). Gurshin was born in Newburyport in 1945 and began his career as a self taught artist in the mid 1960's, while working as a dishwasher at the King's Rock. Inspired by the works of Rufus Porter and other early American masters from New England, Gurshin began by painting tavern signs on the side. It wasn't long before he was painting full time in his first studio in South Essex, named The Yankee House. Gurshin moved to Newburyport in 1970, and then to Glastonbury, CT in 2002 where he continued to find new ways to interpret the old folk art tradition with his painting. (Source CTHouse.com)
