This beautiful etching of the Administration Building at Harvard Medical School by Charleston artist Elizabeth O'Neill Verner measures 10 1/2 x 14 1/2 inches. Done c. 1925, pencil signed on the lower right margin. Known for her love of the Lowcountry surrounding Charleston, with its swamps, fields and wildlife and unique characters, she captures the spirit of the south. Verner initiated the founding of the Charleston Society of Etchers and is considered the matriarch of the Charleston Renaissance, which flourished during the 1920s and 1930s. Verner, along with Alice Smith, Anna Heyward Taylor, and Alfred Hutty, were the nucleus of an art colony in Charleston. She did commissions for many public buildings including this one for Harvard Medical School. This drypoint etching was presented to Dr. George Packer Berry, dean of the school at the time. Included with this print is labeling on the back of the sheet with a Harvard University School of Medicine and Public Health Library stamp with a date of 6th of March, 1953.
