Orlik was a notable Czech painter, etcher and lithographer, who lived and worked in Prague, Austria and Germany.  His art education began as a published of Heinrich Knit, where one of his classmates was Paul Klee. He then studied at the Munich Academy under Lindenschmit, and learned engraving from Johan Raab. After working for the magazine Jugend, he spent most of 1898 traveling through Europe, where he became aware of Japanese art; this led him to travel to Japan and to study Japanese woodcut techniques.  In 1905 he moved to Berlin and took jobs at the Museum of Decorative Arts and at the Berlin College of Arts and Crafts, where one of his students was George Grosz.
