A Bit of Cherry Valley, Otsego County, Central New York, signed lower left "J.M Hart", in a period gilt frame with brass name plate. 17" x 21", frame 24" x 29".

Influenced by his older brother, William M. Hart, James is also regarded as an important member of the second generation of Hudson River School landscape painters.  Hart's family left Scotland for New York in 1831. He trained with a sign and carriage maker in Albany as a young man before studying in Munich as a pupil of Friedrich Wilhelm Schirmer of the Düsseldorf School of painting.  Hart returned to the US in 1853, where he was exhibited at the National Academy of Design (something he would do steadily for 40+ years), and where he would serve as Vice President from 1895 to 1899.  He also exhibited regularly at the Brooklyn Art Association, and like his brother, was particularly well known for his ability to paint cattle, and also for large scale landscapes.  James and his brother opened studios in Keene Valley, NY in the 1870's. He died in Brooklyn and is interred at Green-Wood Cemetery .
