The subject is deMartelly's New Hampshire neighbor, Lizzie Osgood. The Osgood sisters had a reputation for their devotion to the Bible, which deMartelly makes light of in this picture. The banner behind Osgood's head and the black cat in the upper right emphasize Martelly's suspicion of organized religion. Cat: Zink 19. One of his independent regionalist lithographs.
