Still Life in the Style of William Merritt Chase (1849-1916), depicting a kettle, copper bowl, and artichokes. Signed lower right "WMChase". Relined, restretched canvas, old stretcher and antique gilt frame. Canvas appears to have been cleaned and varnished somewhat recently, possibly when it was relined. 17 1/4" x 29 3/4". From a Los Angeles, California estate.
We identify this work as "in the style of" because this painting is not currently in the artist's catalog raisonne. That said, we believe the painting could be in Chase's hand, based on the quality of the rendering, the composition, and the signature. For a similar example of a Chase kitchen still life, see the work at the Springfield Museum titled, 'Still Life (with Ginger Jar, Pumpkin and Samovar)'.
ADDITIONAL CONDITION INFORMATION: UV examination reveals a large old repair to the canvas where it had likely been punctured and ripped--see new photos.

Peterborough Auctions LLC, does not ship any lots sold at our auctions, but in the interest of assisting our customers, upon full payment and buyer's instructions, we will assist in arranging small lots to be picked up by our local shipper (UPS/FedEx dealer) once you have contacted them directly for services. All items are packed and shipped at the buyer's expense. Additionally we will provide shipper phone numbers for larger lots for this same process.
