A beautiful presented reproduction of the 1890 engraving sent "To Ms. Anna Thurber", currently held by the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC. 13 1/2" x 10 1/2", matted and framed to 15 1/2" x 18 1/2". Comstock has come to be known as one of history's most notable entomologists, and a pioneer for women in American academia. She was the first female professor at Cornell University, and collaborated as the engraving illustrator on her husband John Comstock's Introduction to Entomology (1888). Her 1911 book Handbook of Nature Study is notable for its creative use of illustrations, and its broad focus on the very nature of observing nature. She writes “Nature-study is, despite all discussions and perversions, a study of nature; it consists of simple, truthful observations that may, like beads on a string, finally be threaded upon the understanding and thus held together as a logical and harmonious whole. Therefore, the object of the nature-study teacher should be to cultivate in the children powers of accurate observation and to build up within them understanding.” (Jessie Hook & Saunders Drukker, Anna Botsford Comstock: Engraving Nature and Paving the way for Women in the Educational Field).
