Connecticut Dockside, Low Tide. Oil on board, signed lower left, 16†x 20â€, in ornate gilt frame. Matthews began his career as an illustrator for newspapers in his native Missouri before moving the NYC, where he founded and was first president of the Brooklyn Society of Painters and Sculptors. He exhibited with this group as well as The Neighborhood Club throughout the 1920’s and 30’s, while continuing his newspaper work with New York World. After some time in Toledo and Woodstock, NY, Matthews retired to New Canaan, CT.
