View of Lake George, Adirondacks, NY, c.1870''s. Oil on canvas, signed lower left "Chapin", 11 1/2" x 21 3/4", in period heavy gilt frame, possibly selected by the artist. In stable, presentable condition, but with cracks to the paint which could be minimized with a relining of the canvas. Chapin had an itinerant and prolific career, living and working in Boston, NYC, New Orleans, Florida, San Francisco and Los Angeles. He illustrated Civil War scenes for Harper's Weekly in 1864, and is known for his paintings of natural splendors such as the Grand Canyon and the Adirondack mountains, where he disappeared and presumably accidentally drowned in the North River in December 1888.
